THE RESORT AREAS OF THE BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII

Arriving by jet into the Kona International Airport you get a strange feeling.
Is this really Hawaii that you are landing in, or .... is it the dark side of the moon
in daylight hours ??  You are actually landing onto an area that is part of
thousands of acres of an old lava flow.  From one side of the airline you can
look up towards the center of the island so, but there still is lots of black lava
all around you.  From the other side of the airline, you are looking at the blue
ocean and all of the land area is black. No trees, no grass, no green, just black
and blue.  Later you will learn that there are a tremendous amount of black lava
flows over the island, but there is also a lot of beautiful green and lush areas too.

When you land you are just about ten minutes away by car from the ever popular
town of Kailua Kona and that's going south.  Another ten to fifteen minutes
south from there is the Keauhou Kona Resort area.  From the airport and going
north by car, you are about ten minutes away from the entrance to the
Hualalai Resort and an additional forty minute drive north will get you to the
entrances to the three other major resorts that are located on the Kona Kohala
Coast, being Mauna Lani Resort, Mauna Kea Resort and the Waikoloa Beach
Resort.  These four resorts are world class and master-planned to be that way.
All of these areas within the general area of Kona offer a consistently sunny
climate that is normal if you are on the western shore of any of the
Hawaiian Islands.

There's plenty of golf, swimming pools and tennis courts within these resorts.
The same goes for restaurants and other specialty type shopping.  Add to that the
bustling town of Kailua Kona, with its oceanfront shopping district and you've
got all that you will need to enjoy your vacations for many, many visits to come.
