Kauai Village in Kapaa Town
Here is another large center that is centrally located on
east Kauai, midway
between the southern resort area of Poipu and the northern resort area
of
Princeville. The eastern side of Kauai has the largest population center of
Kauai. This
shopping center was opened in 1990 and it fronts onto Kuhio
Highway. Kauai Village
boasts over 110,000 square feet of leasable area
and has as its two primary anchor
stores, Safeway and Long's Drugs. This
eight acre complex features stores and restaurants
that appeal to both local
residents as well as to visitors of Kauai. There is an open air
court with a ten
foot waterfall and a series of landscaped ponds and streams laced with
small
walking bridges and walkways. There are over 30 shops and restaurants
within
this shopping area. There is a good mixture of boutiques, gift shops,
art galleries
and restaurants of the fast-food variety to fine dining.
The identifying feature of the shopping village is its turn-of-the-century
(1900, not
2000) plantation architectural design with a three story clock tower
and two huge Whaling
Wall murals, painted by the artist Wyland.
